Different people can react to drugs in different ways, and in some cases the response can be predicted from their genes. Researchers have identified two genetic variations that can increase this risk.
Tests to check for the presence of these types of individual genetic variations have been available for a long time but, in many cases, they are excessively expensive and take too long. Nanosphere, a Northwestern University state-of-the-art company based in Northbrook, Illinois, hopes to change that. Its Verigene system, which takes just a few hours to analyze DNA from a sample of blood or other material, allows doctors to detect genetic variations without having to send the samples to a laboratory.
