Artificial sweeteners could be used to fight cancer.
Artificial sweeteners are used by people who want to sweeten food while avoiding excess calories from sugar.
Now new research suggests that saccharin could be used as a key ingredient In the manufacture of new drugs for him aggressive cancers treatment with fewer side effects.
Saccharin binds and deactivate a protein called carbonic anhydrase IX. This protein regulates the pH of cancer cells and their environment, maintaining optimal acidity levels to promote their growth and the spread of cancer to other parts of the body.
The healthy cells of the body do not have carbonic anhydrase IX, only cancerous ones. This protein is found in aggressive cancers and is involved in the proliferation of these types of cancer in the brain, breast, kidneys, liver, lungs and pancreas.
Due to its interaction with carbonic anhydrase IX, the researchers want to use saccharin as the basis for creating drugs that can restrict the growth of cancer cells and do them most vulnerable to other therapies such as chemotherapy and the radiotherapy.
