Saint Meliton of Sardis, Bishop of Sardis, in Asia, ecclesiastical writer of the middle of the second century; wrote the first Christian canon of the Old Testament. Little is known about his life, more than twenty works are attributed to him; his Homily on Easter and the celebrated Apology addressed to Emperor Marcus Aurelius were discovered in the sands of Egypt in the mid-twentieth century, constituting the only writings of the author, since only the titles and small extracts are known of his work.
His writings deal with Christology and soteriology, the consequences of sin and the triumph of the risen Christ, the church and those who live according to the new age of Christ and the figures of the Old Testament.
His Saint is celebrated on March 10.
