A new study indicates that Blizzard, the maker of "World of Warcraft," is the most profitable video game studio in the world.
The online role-playing video game “World of Warcraft” has more than 10 million subscribers from around the world and the company's revenue is $ 1.34 billion annually.
Nintendo ranks second, with "Rockstar North" followed by the makers of "Grand Theft Auto" in third place and EA Canada in fourth.
The list has been compiled by Develop magazine and is based on sales figures, user ratings and prestige in the sector.
According to Develop Editor-in-Chief Michael French: “World of Warcraft has… really penetrated popular culture, leaving its mark on everything from Web memos to Simpsons episodes, showing Blizzard's ability to not just create experiences. irresistible, but also to meet user expectations ”.
In the list of the 100 most successful video game manufacturers there are 26 British studios, including Travelers Tales (12th position), maker of Lego video games, and Media Molecule (18th position), creator of LittleBigPlanet.
The Lionhead studio, owned by Peter Molyneux, developer of the Fable games, is ranked 22nd.
The list also includes 14 other independent development studios, owned by Electronic Arts, the world's second-largest game publisher.
Treyarch and Infinity Ward, the developers who alternate creating the “Call of Duty” series, are ranked 7th and 8th.
The list reflects the changing nature of the video game landscape, also including two mobile game developers: PopCap (35th position) and PlayFish (98th position).
